What is High-Yield Savings?

A high-yield savings account (HYSA) is a federally insured deposit account that pays substantially more interest than the national average for standard savings accounts. These accounts are primarily offered by online banks, which have lower overhead than brick-and-mortar institutions. In high-rate environments, HYSAs can pay 4–5% APY, making them competitive with short-term CDs for liquid emergency savings.

When the federal funds rate reached 5.25–5.50% in 2023, online banks offered HYSAs paying 4.5–5.0% APY — over 10 times the national average savings rate of 0.46%. A $50,000 emergency fund earning 4.5% generates $2,250/year in interest versus $230 at an average traditional bank.
