Why we built this
Most financial education is written for people who already know finance. The rest of us get watered-down summaries or paywalled articles that state the formula but never explain what it actually means in practice.
We built Finpendium to be the resource we wished existed: every term explained in plain English, with a worked example using real company data, and a calculator you can use with your own numbers — right now, without creating an account.
What makes Finpendium different
Plain English, not jargon
We explain what a term means and why it matters — not just the formula. Every definition is written for someone encountering the concept for the first time.
Real company data
Every worked example uses actual numbers from SEC filings and company reports — Apple, Microsoft, Tesla, and more. We never fabricate financial data.
156 instant calculators
Enter your own numbers and see results immediately. Every calculator runs in your browser — there is no server involved, no waiting, no data collected.
Free forever, no signup
No account required, no email capture, no premium tier hiding useful content. 1719+ terms, all accessible immediately.
How we make our content
Every definition is written against primary sources — CFA Institute materials, finance textbooks (Brealey & Myers, Damodaran on Valuation), FASB standards, and SEC filings. We do not use AI to generate financial data or example numbers.
Every formula is implemented as code and verified with known test cases before it reaches the site. If a formula can produce a nonsensical result (division by zero, negative equity), the calculator shows a clear explanation instead of a wrong number.
Worked examples cite their source — always a real SEC filing, central bank publication, or company investor relations page. The citation is linked so you can verify it yourself.
Who's behind Finpendium
Tomi Nevalainen, CODE Lunatics
Finpendium was built by Tomi Nevalainen, a private investor with over 10 years of experience in equity markets. After years of looking up the same financial terms across scattered sources, he built the resource he wished had existed — every concept in one place, with real numbers and a calculator you can use immediately.
Finpendium is an educational resource, not investment advice. The definitions, examples, and calculators on this site are designed to help you understand financial concepts. They are not recommendations to buy or sell any security. Always consult a qualified financial professional before making investment decisions.
