A cash-based budgeting system that allocates physical money into labeled envelopes for each spending category.

What is Envelope Budget?

Envelope budgeting is a cash-based personal finance system in which money is withdrawn at the start of each pay period and physically divided into labeled envelopes for each spending category — groceries, gas, dining, entertainment, and so on. When an envelope is empty, spending in that category stops for the period. The tactile nature of cash makes overspending more visceral than swiping a card. Digital versions (apps like YNAB or Goodbudget) replicate the logic using virtual envelopes. The system works best for variable, discretionary expenses where credit card habits encourage overspending.

Example

Example

A person receives $3,000 in cash on the 1st, distributes $600 into the grocery envelope, $200 into dining, $150 into gas, and $100 into entertainment. By the 20th, the dining envelope is empty — no more restaurants until next pay period.
