What is Safe-Haven Currency?

A safe-haven currency is one that investors tend to buy during periods of global economic uncertainty, geopolitical turmoil, or financial market stress, as it is expected to hold or increase its value when riskier assets decline. The three most widely recognized safe-haven currencies are the US dollar (world's reserve currency), the Swiss franc (backed by Switzerland's political neutrality and strong current account surplus), and the Japanese yen (which benefits from Japan's large net international investment position and carry trade unwinding). Safe-haven demand surges during crises such as financial panics, wars, or pandemics, typically causing these currencies to appreciate sharply.

During the March 2020 COVID-19 market panic, the US dollar index (DXY) surged approximately 8% in two weeks as investors globally liquidated assets and fled to dollar cash. Simultaneously, the Swiss franc and Japanese yen also appreciated. The episode illustrated the flight-to-safety dynamic that characterizes safe-haven currency demand during extreme uncertainty.
