Executive Compensation
The total pay package for senior corporate executives, including salary, bonuses, stock options, and other benefits.
What is Executive Compensation?
Executive compensation refers to the total remuneration package for senior corporate executives — primarily CEOs, CFOs, and other C-suite officers. It typically consists of base salary (a relatively small fraction), annual cash bonuses tied to performance targets, long-term equity awards (stock options and restricted stock units), retirement benefits, perquisites ('perks'), and severance arrangements. Equity-based compensation aligns executives' incentives with shareholder interests. Since 2011, US public companies must hold advisory 'say-on-pay' shareholder votes on executive compensation packages. The CEO-to-median-worker pay ratio must also be disclosed. Critics argue executive pay has grown disproportionately, while proponents argue it reflects competitive markets for talent.
Example
Apple's CEO Tim Cook received total compensation of approximately $63 million in fiscal year 2023, of which $49 million came from stock awards, $12 million from performance-based bonuses, and $3 million in base salary plus other benefits. His pay was 1,447 times the median Apple employee compensation — a ratio that drew significant public attention.
