What is Claims Adjuster?

A claims adjuster, also called a claims examiner or claims handler, is a professional who investigates insurance claims on behalf of an insurer or a policyholder to determine liability and the appropriate settlement amount. Adjusters review policy terms, inspect damaged property, interview witnesses, consult medical records, and negotiate settlements. There are three main types: staff adjusters (insurer employees), independent adjusters (contractors hired by insurers), and public adjusters (hired by policyholders to advocate for a larger settlement).

Example

After a kitchen fire causes $40,000 in damage, an insurance company dispatches a staff adjuster who inspects the property, reviews the homeowners policy, and documents all losses. The adjuster determines the claim is covered, calculates the actual cash value payout after depreciation, and issues a settlement check to the policyholder.
